Baldy Bane Theatre Company specialises in theatre in education, promoting understanding and shared experiences for participants. Performances bring people together, working to understand and respect a wider viewpoint by encouraging conversation on the issues being portrayed. Pollokshields has a hugely diverse cultural, socioeconomic and linguistic profile. Often first languages can be diminished and perhaps, in the future, lost in favour of English. This is contrasted with the Gaelic school, which is fighting to keep a language alive. To address this, this project will explore language development, the rhythms of each language and how stories can be told even when the language is not translated. Does a story sound the same in Gaelic, Urdu, Punjabi, Arabic or English?
They will work with children and families from local schools to produce a multimedia performance celebrating language and communication in Pollokshields and the role that schools play in creating future communities. Writing and production would take place in schools once every week, over two terms, to create a performance incorporating music, dance and technology. Partner schools will include St Albert’s Primary, Pollokshields Primary, Glendale Primary and Gaelic Secondary. Funding request: £18,000 to fund production, materials, venue hire and interpreters.
