Awaz the Voice of the Community was established in 2015 to promote social inclusion, working with local communities (particularly, but not exclusively, South Asian communities) on the preservation and conversation of the natural environment, and to advance education, promote and provide training opportunities. They have identified that many local people from BME communities are lacking experience and confidence in use of IT and software. This especially applies to 55+ year olds who have become media/IT isolated. To address this, Awaz are applying for money to train people, using smartphones, tablets and PCs, to gain confidence in using online tools and software. The aim is to enable them to communicate with family and friends; engage with the younger generation, build family social media relationships; engage with agencies performing online transactions with confidence; and access online banking. There will also be an advice provision element. This year long programme would be delivered within Awaz studios. Further benefits of the programme will include gaining new skills and confidence to engage with employability structures and successfully transition from skills building to potential employment; decreasing social isolation; plus improvements in health and well-being. Funding request: £19,030 to fund staffing, equipment, software and wider project costs.
