Investment project code: 9
Titwood Bowling Club (TBC) was founded in 1890, and has played a central role in the social and recreational life of the area since then. Its main purpose is to promote participation in bowling, but equally important is its commitment to provide recreational, social, and informal learning opportunities for all members of the community. Community engagement has raised the need for more sports activities in Pollokshields. TBC has a large pavilion suitable for activities including arts and crafts, dancing, exercise, community meetings and events, cookery classes etc., and two bowling greens where people can learn to play bowls. However, TBC is run by volunteers, limiting its potential to meet local needs. TBC is applying for money to employ a part-time community development and outreach worker (CDOW) to develop sporting, social and arts opportunities using TBC’s facilities. The CDOW will also develop volunteering opportunities for local people. This will widen participation for local people across all communities (all age groups, disabled people, LGBT people, people experiencing poverty and people from BME communities). This will encourage community cohesion, break down barriers between different social groups, and create health and wellbeing benefits. Funding request: £20,000 to fund staffing, equipment, events and volunteer expenses.
